Jobs didn't invent computer technology, or the cell phone, or the notion of digitizing music. But he invented methods, business models, and devices that turned each into significantly larger cultural and economic phenomena.

To a degree, one might look back on the arc of Jobs's career and conclude that he simply rode a series of technological waves. But Jobs, and the company he led, rode the waves while pushing back against them.

In an industry frequently hostile to design, Jobs's Apple banked on it. In an industry in which products simply got cheaper every year and everything tends toward a commodity, Apple's products were able to command a premium. And in an age of pinched consumer spending, millions of people were eager — even desperate — to shell out for the latest version of the iPod, the iPad, or the iPhone.

In an era frequently characterized by executive greed and massive pay for significant underperformance, Jobs worked for a dollar a year. At a time when many founding CEOs step down when they hit their late 40s and early 50s to chase other pursuits (a la Bill Gates), Jobs stuck with it. In an era in which many experts fretted about the ability of America's economy to thrive and innovate, Apple grew into a major exporter. Apple now represents American brands, the way McDonald's and IBM and Coca-Cola once did.

In an era in which equity values stagnated, Apple's stock thrived. The performance of the company's stock, which is now worth $322 billion, up from a few billion in 2003, is one of the great examples of value creation in modern history.

It's difficult to put a tag on what it is precisely that Jobs did. He didn't create a fundamentally new business structure, the way John D. Rockefeller did with the vertical integration of Standard Oil. He didn't democratize a product that had only been available to the very rich, as Henry Ford did with the Model T. And he didn't fundamentally alter the distribution, logistics, and production systems the way that Sam Walton did with Wal-Mart. Under Jobs, Apple simply created a bunch of really cool products that people decided they needed to have. And have again. While Apple had brilliant ads, and while Jobs was an excellent salesperson, Apple's rabid, evangelizing fans have been the most effective marketing tool. When it comes to clothes, or shoes, or cars, my kids, 13 and 9, are largely indifferent to brands. When it was time for them to get their own computer, it had to be a Mac.

There are three basic business stories: the rise, the fall, and then the comeback. Jobs provided a vivid example of each. He started Apple Computer in the 1970s out of the proverbial garage with Steve Wozniak, only to be pushed after the company had gained scale. Returning to helm the company in 1997, he led a comeback that was, in many ways, far more impressive than the original rise.

Yes, Steve Jobs got rich in the past decade. But he didn't so at the expense of his shareholders. In fact, they grew rich along with him. And Apple didn't prosper at the expense of partners. The walled-garden approach of iTunes and the Apps store goes went against the grain of the notion that everything online should be free. But it was, at root, a courageous act. And it served as a kind of affirmation for content producers. And perhaps that's why he got such good press.

Several industries in the past decade found themselves essentially powerless in the face of the internet and the advent of digital technology. But Jobs and Apple invented devices and business models that encouraged people to pay: for music, for television shows and movies, for books, and for applications. By continuing to roll out new products, Apple has really expanded the playing field for content creators. It's much more compelling to watch a movie on an iPad than it is on an iPod.

The highest form of charity is helping somebody find a job or a means to support themselves. Just so, one might argue that the highest form of business is creating a profitable enterprise that allows and encourages other people to innovate and find means to support themselves. Apple has done that time and again. Yes, the publishing and music industries have griped over payment terms. But Apple is allowing individuals and companies to reach truly massive audiences at a relatively low cost. It has rescued some markets, revived others, and created entirely new ones.

This century is only a decade old. But it's a safe bet that in 2099, when analysts and historians are looking back, Steve Jobs will be remembered as one of the giants of 21st century business.

Disciplinary action against three cops in Foreigners' Registration Office

Mysore, June 26 (KK&KMC)- The City Police initiated disciplinary action against three of their personnel working in Foreigners' Registration Office (FRO) at the Office of the Police Commissioner, on charges of corruption and rude behaviour with foreigners. The action is based on repeated complaints by foreigners regarding the problems being faced by them pertaining to issue of passports, foreigners' registration certificate extension and exit permit, etc.

It is learnt that DCP (Law and Order) Basavaraj Y. Malagatti, who also is the Foreigners' Registration Officer, had recently pulled up Head Constable Subramanya and constables Mallikarjuna and Raghavendra on charges of corruption and rude behaviour and initiated action against them. They have been transferred elsewhere.

Meanwhile, the DCP has also given training to Police personnel working in the FRO on how to behave with the foreigners so that they have a good impression of India and its people. It is

Around 4,000 foreigners from 82 countries are living in the city, with many of them learning yoga and pursuing academics. Most of them hail from Iran, Maldives, Yemen and Tanzania, according to the DCP who said that a large number of tourists from America, Britain and Japan also visit Mysore to learn yoga.

It may be recalled the DCP had earlier taken action against two Iranian nationals — Masoud Keramati and Mohamed Reza Ali Akbar Jalali — for producing fake certificates to obtain student visa and to register the passport with the FRO.

According to statistics, entry of as many as 1,647 foreigners in 2009 and 2,037 foreigners in 2010 were registered. Everyday, about 80 to 100 foreigners visit the FRO for passport registration, extension of stay in India, exit permit and other reasons.

The local hip-hop world was rocked this week by the slaying of Montae "M-Bone" Talbert, 22, a member of the Cali Swag District, the group behind the national dance craze "the Dougie."

Since his shooting Sunday night in the 400 block of North La Brea Boulevard in Inglewood, police have interviewed multiple witnesses in an attempt to piece together the details of the shooting. Thus far, no arrests have been made.

TMZ has reported that the shooting potentially stemmed from a conflict over a woman, but law-enforcement officials have yet to divulge a possible motive for the drive-by shooting. In a recent interview with the gossip site, the members of Cali Swag District stressed that it was not gang related.

"It had nothing to do with gang violence. It wasn't nothing like that. It was just a 'wrong place at the wrong time' situation. We just gotta stay strong for the homey," Corey "Smoove" Fowler said in a video posted on TMZ. "We don't know who's responsible for it or what the case may be. It's just bad, man. We're just gonna leave it up to the law right now because there's really nothing we can do."

Members of Cali Swag District, raised in Inglewood, spoke on the culture of violence within their hometown in a January interview with the Los Angeles Times.

"We were never in gangs, but you can't not know the gang members when you grow up in Inglewood. We grew up around them, and everyone starts young," said Chante "Yung" Clee. "You go to parties, people punch people, and then things get more serious. We ran with them sometimes, but we never joined. It never made sense. Slowly, but surely, people go to jail or get killed. It gets out of hand."

According to data collected by The Times’ interactive Homicide Report, 69 homicides have been reported within 2 miles of Sunday's shooting since January 2007.

"During the '90s, you could drive down the street and see people flying rags. You could tell a gang member from a random person," Yung said in January. "Now, you’ll see gang members in skinny jeans. You can get shot by a dude on a skateboard in Vans with skinny jeans and a string for a belt."

Though a full narrative has yet to emerge about Sunday night's events, Smoove told TMZ that they had just came home from tour the day beforehand. Prior to Talbert's fateful trip to the liquor store, they had been celebrating a friend's birthday.

"He went to the store to get something to drink, and randomly, somebody pulls up, don't say no words, don't shoot a lot of shots, just did what they had to do and got on. It had to be something, but we really can't tell exactly what it was," Smoove told TMZ.

Tanzania invites Indian investments in tourism, uranium mining

Tanzania has invited Indians to invest in diverse sectors in this East African country, including tourism, uranium, gas and gold mining, agriculture and ICT. The invitation to invest was extended by the Tanzanian Prime Minister, Mr Mizengo Kitanza Peter Pinda, in an hour- long free-wheeling chat with a group of visiting Indian newspersons.

“Tourism is just one of the sectors in which India can invest by either building hotels or other businesses. Indians investing in tourism will probably help Tanzania more but investing will be a good opportunity for India,” said the Prime Minister. Mr Peter Pinda indicated that interest was already being shown by “some parties” in uranium mining. “It still has to be seen whether they will buy and process (the uranium) for their own use. But uranium mining is an area that is very new,” the Prime Minister said.

Tanzania recently allowed a Russian firm to undertake mining of uranium in the south of the country. Sources indicated that after the passage of the nuclear deal, India started looking abroad for multiple sources of uranium to feed the ambitious nuclear programme it was planning. Indian officials had rejected uranium from Tanzania, claiming it was not first-grade material

However, soon enough, Russia, Australia and some others countries began to stand in queue for rights to mine uranium from Tanzania. Sources felt that one way to move ahead India's ambitious initiative with Africa was to partner in various ventures, including this one.

Emphasising on the depth and long history of friendship between India and Tanzania, Mr Peter Pinda called India a “good friend” to whom the East Africans can turn to in times of need. Giving an example of this friendship, the Prime Minister pointed out that if there was an issue say on whether to allow a company from Russia or the US to mine uranium here, Tanzania was likely to turn to India to get some impartial advice rather than either of the two developed countries.

The Indian Embassy officials here say that it is not true that India's name is being sullied in the Tanzanian market because of fake drugs with “Made in India” labels. Talking to visiting Indian journalists, Counsellor Mr N.J. Gangte said that Kenya and Tanzania were regularly sending officials to inspect labs making pharmaceuticals in India to get over this problem.

A 2006 report by the World Health Organisation (WHO) had estimated that in developing countries in Africa, and in parts of Asia and Latin America, up to 30 per cent of medicines in the market are counterfeit.

Global counterfeit syndicates are involved in the business. Suppliers from China, India, Europe and the US are widely believed to have used the country as a gateway into Africa.

INDIAN PRESENCE

Several Indian brand names including Bajaj, TVS scooter rickshaws and Indian tractors are “big sellers” in Tanzania.

The major Indian companies in Tanzania include Reliance and Bharti Airtel.

Bharti Airtel, which recently acquired Zain Telecom here as part of its 16 countries buyout from Zain Africa and Reliance Industries, has acquired a majority stake and management control of Gulf Africa Petroleum Corporation (GAPCO). The Kamal Group of Industries has established the first-ever private Export Processing Zone owned by an Indian group and RITES.

“India should concentrate on its strengths to give a further boost to India-Tanzania trade and economic relations which have been doing very well,” senior Indian diplomats stationed here told Business Line.

The Indian High Commissioner in Tanzania, Mr K.V. Bhagirath, pointed out that India should focus on pharmaceuticals, engineering and chemical products, all of which are its strengths in Tanzania.

Bilateral trade with India stood at $ 1.2 billion, with India's exports totalling $920 million and imports amounting to $238 million during 2009-10.

INDIA-AFRICA SUMMIT

The second India-Africa Forum summit is scheduled to be held later this year.

The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, is expected to attend the summit and could also undertake bilateral visits to some friendly African nations, though this is yet to be firmed up.

The Envoy added that there has also been an increase in the number of visas being issued to Tanzanian citizens wanting to travel to India.

“On some days, we issue as many as 100 visas; 40 per cent of all visas issued are business visas, followed by almost 20 per cent of the people seeking medical visas,” he said.

For President Ronald Reagan in 1986, it was a familiar attack on a familiar enemy – Moammar Ghadafi.He announced that the US would take action on April 14, 1986.
“Despite our repeated warnings, Ghadafi continued his reckless policy of intimidation, his relentless pursuit of terror,” said President Reagan in his address to the nation. “He counted on America to be passive.He counted wrong.”
Apparently, so did Saddam Hussein, according to President George H.W. Bush in his televised announcement on January 16, 1991, it was in response to a conflict that had started in August, when “the dictator of Iraq invaded it’s small and helpless neighbor.”
“Just two hours ago, allied air forces began an attack on military targets Iraq and Kuwait,” Bush, Sr. said in his address.
For his successor, President Bill Clinton – the target was Slobodan Milosevic, President of Serbia and Yugoslavia.
“My fellow Americans, today our armed forms joined our NATO allies in airstrikes against Serbian forces responsible for the brutality in Kosovo,” Clinton said on March 24, 1999.
President George W. Bush said in March 2003 it was weapons of mass destruction that threatened the world, and invaded Iraq in what was supposed to be a quick and limited campaign.
“On my orders, coalition forces have begun striking selected targets of military importance to undermine Saddam Hussein’s ability to wage war,” Bush said.
Many American’s thought it would end there, especially after US President Barack Obama’s clear anti-war stance in his campaign. He has spent most of his presidency trying to end the wars started by his predecessor.

Tanzanite export ban dulls Jaipur's processors...

Tanzania's ban on export of tanzanite weighing over one gram has put scores of small and medium stone processing enterprises in the lurch, especially in Jaipur.

Tanzanite, a bluish gemstone, is said to be 1,000 times rarer than diamond.

Just as Surat is known for processing rough diamonds, Jaipur has gained proficiency in processing coloured gemstones including rough tanzanite over the past five decades. Of the 10 lakh people employed by the gemstone processing industry, about two lakh are in Jaipur and about 45,000 are specialised in finishing tanzanite.

Mr Rajiv Jain, Chairman, the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council, said India exports cut-and-polished tanzanite worth Rs 300-350 crore an annum. The domestic market alone accounts for about Rs 100 crore.

“While cut-and-polished tanzanite is exported when it is ready, the industry has an inventory of about $2-3 million roughs, which would suffice for not more than 15 days,” he added.

A carat of cut-and-polished tanzanite, depending on quality and finish, costs between $10 (Rs 450) and $40 (Rs 1,800).

Reason for ban

India processes about 95 per cent of tanzanite produced in Tanzania, the only source for the gemstone. The ban, effective from January, was part of the Mining Act and is aimed at increasing the contribution of the industry to Tanzania's economy.

Mr Jain said the council plans to ask the Commerce and External Affairs Ministries to mediate on their behalf.

Tanzanite is mined at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's tallest peak. Tanzanite is noted for its remarkably strong trichroism, which appears alternately in sapphire blue, violet and burgundy depending on crystal orientation.

Phased manner

Though the industry understood the concern of the Tanzanian Government to improve job opportunities in their country, it should have curtailed exports in a phased manner to gain expertise in processing the roughs, Mr Jain felt.

Tanzanite mining provides direct employment for about 14,000 workers in Tanzania, Africa's third-largest gold producing State after South Africa and Ghana. About 42 per cent of Tanzanian exports come from minerals, mainly gold, diamonds and tanzanite.

Tanzanite in its rough state is usually reddish brown. It requires heat treatment to 600 degree Celsius in a gemological oven to bring out the blue violet character of the stone. Besides India, other countries that process tanzanite include Thailand and Hong Kong.

Bandh brings Karnataka to a halt

The Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled Karnataka on Monday saw the State grind to a total halt as practically all vehicles — public and private — went off the road, commercial establishments downed shutters and schools and colleges remained shut. The closure was part of the all-India bandh called by central Opposition parties protesting against the latest fuel price hike.

The bandh was peaceful across the State, barring a few instances of stone-throwing in Bangalore, Kolar and Hubli, said Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order) A.R. Infant. Two trains in Hubli and one each in Mysore and Tumkur were detained for a few minutes by bandh supporters.

While the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation withdrew its services, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation did likewise after 10 a.m. by when protesters had damaged 68 buses. With various autorickshaw and taxi drivers' unions supporting the bandh, no public transport was available.

While government offices reported thin attendance, private companies, shopping malls, theatres and petroleum outlets declared a holiday.

Though train services were normal, those who arrived in railway stations and the airport had to face a harrowing time as they had no means of transport to reach their destinations. Some flights were cancelled or combined with others. Absence of public transport severely affected poor people with ailments as they were unable to reach hospitals. Closure of establishments at the Agricultural Product Marketing Committees and regular markets across the State severely affected labourers. In Bangalore, the police arrested 81 protesters. The former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda walked from the Janata Dal (Secular) office on Racecourse Road to Freedom Park to express his support for the bandh while Medical Education Minister Ramachandra Gowda walked all the way from his residence in Basaveshwaranagar to the Vidhana Soudha.

Beware, ATMs are as dirty as public toilets

London, Jan 12 (IANS) The next time you take out money from an automated teller machine (ATM), make sure you either wear gloves or wash your hands. Cleanliness tests have revealed that cash machines are as dirty and carry the same germs as public toilets.
Health experts took swabs from the numeric key pads on a string of ATMs around Britain that are used by thousands of shoppers every day.
They then took similar swabs from the seats of nearby public toilets and compared the bacteria under microscopes in a lab.
The swabs were left to grow overnight and samples from both locations were found to contain pseudomonads and bacillus - bacteria known to cause sickness and diarrhoea, according to the Daily Mail.
Richard Hastings, microbiologist for BioCote, a company that produces anti-bacterial products, said: 'We were interested in comparing the levels of bacterial contamination between heavily-used ATM machines and public toilets.'
'We were surprised by our results because the ATM machines were shown to be heavily contaminated with bacteria, to the same level as nearby public toilets.'
BioCote carried out the tests after a survey which revealed Britons consider public toilets to be the biggest health risk.
The study of 3,000 adults also revealed public telephones are considered the biggest health risk.
Fears over germs spreading saw almost a quarter of people labelling public telephones as 'very dirty' with more than one in 10 wiping the handset and buttons down before using one.
And 48 percent of people - 23 millions adults - even avoid using them altogether unless they have to because they are concerned about the dirt or bugs they may pick up from it.
The third place in the study went to bus stops, while the dusty and grimy atmosphere in London Underground and metro stations saw them ranked fourth.
Seats on a bus completed the top five, with one in 10 people admitting they regularly try to clean or cover them before sitting down.
Tube and tram seats followed close behind in sixth place while cash machines were at number seven.
'Public telephones can be a real hotspot for germs and grime. Not only are they handled by different people each day, but the handsets are then held close to people's nose and mouth. All it takes is for one person to have a cold or bug and this would get passed on to everyone else who uses the phone,' Hastings said.

Tanzanian student found dead in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: A decomposed body of a 25-year-old Tanzanian student was found in his flat at Alwal area here this morning and police suspect that the student might have committed suicide.

According to Alwal Police, the deceased identified as Shakil Hamdoum was a student of Saifabad Post Graduate College of Science, (a Constituent College of Osmania University) here.

The neighbours alerted the police after a foul smell emanated from the flat this morning. When the door was broken open, the police found the student's body in a highly decomposed state.

Alwal Inspector of Police K Srinivas Rao told PTI that the student might have died four to five days ago and suspected that he might have committed suicide after consuming some poisonous substance.

"Shakil who hailed from Tanzania was staying alone in the flat for the past 2 years and was also pursuing some part-time courses. The door was bolted from inside and the reason behind the incident was still not known. No suicide note was found from the flat," the police official said.

The body has been sent for an autopsy. Further investigations were underway.

The first mainline container vessel of the current financial year – m.v. Kota Nabil – with raw cashew cargo from Port Mtwara in East Africa called at New Mangalore Port on November 21.

The mainline vessel belonging to Pacific International Lines (PIL) unloaded 153 boxes of raw cashew cargo for distribution among various cashew processing units in and around Mangalore, and sailed out on Monday morning.

A press release by Mr S. Gopalakrishna, Traffic Manager of the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT), said here on Monday that the entire operation took only one shift (eight hours) due to the efficiency of the cargo handling workers.

The advantage of mainline vessel directly calling at New Mangalore Port is that it brings down the transit time and handling cost. It will take only nine days between Mangalore and East Africa whereas vessels via Colombo will take 21 days.

The release said that the exporters can utilise the advantage of moving their cargo as the vessel is touching Singapore and Far East countries on its return voyage.

Quoting Mr P. Tamilvanan, Chairman of NMPT, the release said that the mainline vessels directly calling at the port has resulted in growth of container traffic.

While requesting all the mainline operators and users to make use of the advantageous position of lesser transit time and lesser handling cost, he said the port handled a record quantity of 26,634 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of container traffic till November 22 of the current fiscal as against 19,724 TEUs handled during the corresponding period of previous year, recording a growth of 35 per cent.

The release said that Sea Master Shipping Logistics Pvt Ltd of Seaways Group was the agent of the vessel and HML Agencies was stevedores and C&F (clearing and forwarding) agent.

John was hard working and highly competent student at the university, but couldn’t get
the job after graduation. Getting frustrated with job hunting, John’s morale and
persistence was fading away. This is a similar scenario for most students leaving
universities across the country. Though a good degree is a pre-requisite in the graduate
employment market, alone in itself is not enough to secure their first graduate job.
Every now and then graduating students from our universities wonder exactly what
employers are looking for when they hire new graduates. Do they want top students with
academic honors? Only people who graduated from the best colleges? Or do they have
totally different criteria? From early childhood we’ve been preached to by parents,
teachers and society to get good grades, get into the best schools and your success will be
guaranteed. Sounds good but it has no basis in fact it just isn’t true these days.
How does then an employer choose the right person from hundreds of applicants all with
the same class of degree? The skills you develop whilst at school/college and university
and the experiences you gain will all help to give you the edge over the next candidate.
This means it is essential not just to bury your head in a book all the time while you are at
university, but to be proactive and engage in interests and work experience, which help to

Employers are looking for people who can do the job, who have the necessary technical
skills required for the position for which they are being considered. After that they want

Brazil elects Dilma Rousseff, nation's first woman president

-- Dilma Rousseff has won the election for president in Brazil, according to the country's Supreme Electoral Tribunal Minister,

making her the nation's first woman to hold the office.

TSE Minister Ricardo Lewandowski made the announcement to the local press around 8 p.m. local time (6 p.m. Eastern) stating on the tribunal's website that she was "mathematically elected the president of Brasil."

Rousseff -- President Luiz Inacio da Silva's right-hand woman -- has served as his chief of staff. Previously, as energy minister, she claims to have helped turn Brazil into one of the world's leading energy giants.

A left-wing guerrilla fighter during the military dictatorship rule in the 1960s, Rousseff said during a congressional hearing that she was "barbarically tortured" after she was charged with subversion by the military regime.

Her opponent, Jose Serra, also suffered persecution during Brazil's military rule and was forced into exile during the 1960s.

A centrist politician, he served as health minister during Fernando Henrique Cardoso's government. He recently left his job as governor of Brazil's richest state, Sao Paulo, to run for presidency.

Millions of voters lined up across Brazil's vast territory to vote in the heated runoff.

Voters living abroad correspond to about 0.15 percent of the Brazilian electorate, about 200,000.

In 60 Brazilian cities, voters used their thumbs instead of ballots on a newly launched biometric system, where voters scan their fingers to log in and vote.

TSE officials said all regions, however remote, will have the ubiquitous electronic voting machine. In indigenous areas in the Amazon, these voting machines were delivered by boats and helicopters. It costs the state of Amazonas 5 million reais. (U.S. $3 million) to place the voting machines.

One of the most challenging trajectories, officials said, is the one to Sao Gabriel da Cachoeira, a densly-forested area in the Amazon.

"There, our electronic machines first leave Manaus by plane," said Pedro Batista, TSE Director for the Amazon.

"It's loaded onto a helicopter, and then travels by boat before being carried on some one's back for a long walk to a remote village," he said.

In Sao Paulo, Brazil's largest city, voters faced heavy rains and threats of flooding.

LimeWire is one of the most popular file-sharing software in the world, but sadly this can already be considered history as the service has been shut down effective immediately. The RIAA has filed suit against LimeWire about four years ago and yesterday, a U.S. District Court Judge has ruled that the company will have to shut down its services, while the company’s all assets have been frozen.
Federal Judge Wood Kimba said that the LimeWire LLC company has received an order to stop distributing its file sharing program because it’s illegal to download and share copyrighted material without an authorization from the owners of that material.
The LimeWire shut down has affected million of users so I repeat: you can already regard the LimeWire free download as a part of the history.
Although we shouldn’t help the RIAA to turn their attention towards other file-sharing software, we recommend you to use FrostWire, but remember: not for illegal downloads or anything.

Managing your time: Getting the balance right

Most students have found they have bleary-eye and strung out from too much coffee and too
little sleep after pulling an "all nighter" right before the big exams. If you promise yourself
that you will study “whenever you find time,” you may never find time. To become efficient,
you must set aside time for studying. We all have the ability to put off until tomorrow the
things that we know we should be working on today. It's human nature. Unfortunately,
ineffective time management doesn't help us much, in school or outside of school.
However the following guidelines will help students better manage their time. The guidelines
will be short and to the point. Time management can be thought of as an endless series of
decisions that establish a routine. All methods of time management can be reduced to
three steps:
1: List Your Activities
2: Create a Week's Plan
3: When in doubt, prioritize
Make a list of everything you need to do during a typical week. Include ALL activities (not
just assignments).Also list activities that come at fixed times and cannot be changed (e.g.,
classes, work responsibilities, doctor's appointment). Then list class assignments and
meetings (e.g., study groups, meeting with your teacher, etc.) together with the list of
recreation and social activities.
Next take the list you made of your activities and the day & time. Write these activities down
on a week's calendar followed by any related activities, for example, reading 2 chapters for
English or writing a biology lab report.
Now what you need to do is PRIORITIZE. In other words, you need to determine the importance and urgency of each activity and use this information to revise your schedule (week's plan). In some cases, you may decide to postpone an activity that is not urgent, or perhaps you will spend less time on an activity that is not so important.
In this way scheduling your time can work like a magic to lower the stress, reduce the tension, worries and inefficiency. It frees you from constant decision making and lets you make the best use of your time
These are the first steps towards getting yourself better organized and doing better in your classes. Now that you have made a schedule and prioritized what you need to do, it would be a good idea to carry your schedule with you. Make sure that you update your schedule as new things come along. For next week and the weeks after that, you just need to repeat the process. You may need about 3 weeks to become accustomed to the new habit.
They aren't "magic pills" that will suddenly make you super efficient and well organized, but if you use them gradually to improve the way you organize your time, you will probably find that your life as a student is a little less stressful and, with any luck, you will have time to do more of the things that you enjoy outside of your school.

According to Malian historian and playwright Gaoussou Diawara, Africans may have "discovered" America nearly two centuries before Christopher Columbus's famous landing. In his forthcoming book, The Saga of Abubakari II...He Left with 2000 Boats, Diawara describes an African monarch who abdicated his throne in 1311 and set off to discover whether the Atlantic Ocean, like the vast River Niger, "had another bank."

Diawara contends that in 1312 Abubakari II, who ruled over a vast West African empire including modern-day Mali, landed in Recife, on the coast of Brazil. The scholar, who heads a research project dedicated to exploring the history and heritage of Abubakari II, marshals considerable archaeological and linguistic evidence demonstrating the African presence in pre-Columbian America.

He's not the first to do so. The thesis of an early African presence in the Americas was prominently advanced by Guyana-born anthropologist Ivan Van Sertima in his 1977 book, They Came Before Columbus. Van Sertima argues that Africans reached the Americas in two stages. The first wave, ancient Egyptians and Nubians , reached the Gulf of Mexico around 1200 BCE and 800 BCE, respectively, bringing with them writing and pyramid-building. Centuries later, around 1310 CE, the Mande people of West Africa went to Mexico, Panama, Ecuador, Colombia, Peru and various Caribbean islands, according to Van Sertima. The Olmec stone heads of Mexico, which have astonishingly African features, are among the archaeological and linguistic evidence Van Sertima presents.

Van Sertima describes how, according to Columbus's own writings, the people living on the island of Hispaniola (later Haiti and the Dominican Republic) told him that "black-skinned people had come from the south and southeast trading in gold-tipped metal spears. Columbus sent samples of these spears back to Spain to be tested, and they were found to be identical in their proportions of gold, silver and copper alloys to spears then being forged in African Guinea. Columbus' son, Ferdinand, said his father told him that he had seen black people north of what is now Honduras."

The evidence, Van Sertima concludes, "argues overwhelmingly against a mere coincidence." Indeed, the idea that Columbus was not the first person from across the ocean to "discover" the Americas is commonplace, and shared by the Society of American Archaeology, which declared in 1968 that "there cannot be now any question, but that there were visitors to the New World from the Old in historic or even prehistoric time before 1492."

But did they come from Africa?

Unlike theories that Viking explorers from Northern Europe arrived on the North American continent hundreds of years before Columbus - theories that are debated but generally treated with cautious respect - Van Sertima's assertions drew angry fire from those who disagreed.

A New York Times reviewer dismissed Van Sertima as a "deluded scholar" writing "ignorant rubbish" with "abysmal" historical and research methods. Students of Meso-America have also strongly disputed Van Sertima's characterization of the Olmec people as African. David Grove, an expert on Olmec civilization, notes that Van Sertima's claims about the Olmecs' blackness are suspect because "the Olmecs did not have a selection of skin tones to choose from in making their monuments. The only stone available to them was black stone. The source of the stone is the Tuxlas Mountains, of volcanic origin." A particularly caustic critique, titled "Van Sertima's Afrocentricity and the Olmecs," even scoffed that "native Americans would have sacrificed and eaten the Africans if they came."

Such attacks don't surprise Richard Poe, the author of Black Spark, White Fire: Did African Explorers Civilize Ancient Europe?, which addresses the possibility of Africans taking transatlantic trips before Columbus.

"Ivan Van Sertima is a courageous and brilliant scholar, who has done ground-breaking work," says Poe. "His findings have never received the fair hearing that they deserve. Rather than refuting his arguments, Van Sertima's critics habitually resort to mean-spirited, personal attacks. The anger and indignation his theories provoke seems to go beyond mere scholarly disagreement."

Such fierceness, Poe says, has a lot to do with race — black scholars generally embraced Van Sertima's work. "Consciously or unconsciously, some of Van Sertima's critics may still be clinging to the 19th-century notion that seafaring is a European monopoly," he says. "Seafaring is the quintessential European achievement, the single endeavor of which we are most proud. It was seafaring that enabled Europe to conquer the world. White people have a deep sense of themselves as explorers. The idea that black Africans might have beaten us to the New World threatens our sense of ownership over the seas. Maybe it's a bit like the way some black people dislike hearing white musicians do rap. A hundred years ago, it was common for scholars to claim that peoples of so-called 'Aryan' or Nordic race possessed a peculiar combination of courage and wanderlust that made them natural sailors. Non-Aryans were viewed as poor sailors, even when the evidence proved
otherwise -- as in the case of the Egyptians, who are known to have made long sea voyages to Somalia, Crete, Greece and probably beyond."

The evidence, Diawara argues, can still be found in Africa. Both Van Sertima and Diawara say that Mali's griots (oral historians) tell of the African king who sent an expedition to the "Western Ocean." His voyage is mentioned not only in the griots' narratives, but also in Arabic texts, including a 14th century Egyptian book by the historian al-Omari.

In an interview with the BBC, Tiemoko Konate, one of the researchers working with Diawara, offered other evidence of Abubakari's landing in Recife, Brazil: "Its [Recife's] other name is Purnanbuco, which we believe is an aberration of the Mande name for the rich gold fields that accounted for much of the wealth of the Mali Empire, Boure Bambouk." Konate also cites tests, similar to those Van Sertima described, showing that the gold tips of spears found by Columbus in the Americas may be made of originally West African gold.

In an interview with Emerge magazine, Van Sertima argued that the Atlantic's currents serve as natural marine conveyer belts: "Once you enter them, you are transported (even against your will, even with no navigational skill) from one bank of the ocean to the other," he said. "Thor Heyerdahl crossed the Atlantic in 1969 in a papyrus boat like those built by Africans before the time of Christ. Hannes Lindemann crossed the Atlantic in an African dugout in 12 days less than it took Amerigo Vespucci or Columbus to cross. Three currents can carry Africans to the Americas: off the Cape Verde islands, off the Senegambia coast, and off the southern coast of Africa. It is at the end of these currents that we have found Africans in America before Columbus."

Interestingly, Diawara thinks that the story of Abubakari II, who apparently never returned to Africa, has important lessons to offer Africans today - particularly African leaders in the states that used to constitute the ancient Malian empire. "Look at what's going on in all the remnants of that empire, in Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea," Diawara said in a BBC interview. "Politicians are bathing their countries in blood, setting them on fire just so that they can cling to power. They should take an example from Abubakari II.
